Self-Assessment & Personal Tax

Self-Assessment & Personal Tax

There are plenty of reasons you might need to complete a Self Assessment return, and you do not need to know exactly what applies before you speak to us.

Tell us what has changed

We’ll help you make sense of what needs to go on your tax return

You might be self-employed, have started doing some freelance work alongside your job, receive dividends, rent out a property or have income coming from a few different places.

You might simply have had a letter from HMRC and want someone to tell you what you need to do.

We can help with all of that.

It starts with understanding what has happened during the year

We will talk through your circumstances and work out what needs to be included.

For some people, that might be one source of income and a handful of expenses.

For somebody else, we may need to bring together employment income, dividends, property income, investments or other things that have changed during the year.

There is no expectation that you arrive knowing which figures go where.

We will ask the questions we need to ask and help you pull the right information together.

We want to make sure you are claiming what you are entitled to

Preparing the return properly also means looking at the expenses, allowances and reliefs that may apply to you.

Something that feels like a normal everyday cost to you may have a tax implication that is worth considering.

Equally, there may be things you assume you can claim that do not quite work that way.

We will go through what is relevant to your circumstances and make sure the return is based on the right information.

The aim is for you to pay the tax you need to pay without overlooking anything you are genuinely entitled to.

Sometimes the return starts another useful conversation

Your tax return can also show us when something has started to change.

Perhaps your side business is becoming a much bigger part of your income.

Maybe rental income has increased, you are taking more from your company or you have had a particularly strong year.

None of those things automatically mean you need to do anything differently.

They are simply useful things for us to notice.

If we think there is something worth talking about for the year ahead, we will tell you and explain why.

You will know what happens next

  1. Once everything is ready, we will take you through the position, including how much is due and the relevant payment dates.

  2. If payments on account apply, we will explain those as part of the conversation so you know what to expect.

  3. If there is something in the figures that needs a little more explanation, we will spend the time going through it with you.

  4. You should finish the process feeling comfortable that everything has been dealt with properly and knowing what comes next.

Not sure whether you need to complete a tax return?

You are welcome to ask us before you do anything else.

Tell us what has changed, what income you have received or what HMRC has sent you, and we can help you work out whether a return is needed.

If it is, we will take you through it from there.
