Tax Return Services

There are lots of reasons you might need to complete a tax return. You might be self-employed, have a small side business, receive rental income, take dividends from a company or have more than one source of income.

Tell us what has changed

Tax returns are easier when someone is looking at the whole picture

Sometimes it is straightforward. Sometimes there is a little more to think about. Our job is to make sure the return is completed properly, but also to look at what has changed during the year and whether there is anything worth discussing with you before we move on.

Do you want to pay less tax, or are you trying to get a bigger mortgage?

When we sit down with you, we’re not only thinking about the tax return in front of us.

We want to understand what you’re working towards.

Are you planning to buy a home? Grow your business? Take on borrowing? Change the way you pay yourself?

Those conversations matter because your tax position is only one part of the bigger picture.

Our job is to make sure you understand your options, the tax implications and how the decisions you make today could affect what you want to do next.

We’ll make sure the return reflects your circumstances properly

We know tax returns can feel complicated, stressful or overwhelming, particularly if you don’t deal with them every day.

Every tax return is slightly different because every person’s circumstances are slightly different.

We may need to look at things such as:

Self-employed income

Property income

Dividends

Employment income

Investment income

Capital gains

Pension income

Allowable expenses

Reliefs and allowances that may apply

We will only focus on what is relevant to you.

If there is something we need to understand better, we will ask. If there is something you may be entitled to claim, we will make sure it has been considered.

The aim is to make sure the return is accurate and that you are not overlooking anything that could affect the amount of tax you pay.

Sometimes a tax return highlights something worth talking about

A tax return gives us a useful view of what has happened over the year.

A small business

For someone with a small business, that might show that income has grown more quickly than expected.

A landlord

For a landlord, it might be a change in property income or costs.

Dividends

For someone taking dividends, it might be worth looking at how that sits alongside other income.

Sometimes there will be something worth planning around for the year ahead. Sometimes there will not. Either way, we think it is useful to look.

We’ll explain the position clearly

Once the return is prepared, we will talk you through the tax position so you know what is due and when it needs to be paid.

If the figure is different from what you expected, we will explain what has driven the change.

If payments on account apply, we will make sure you understand how they work and what they mean for the next payment date.

You should come away knowing where you stand, rather than simply receiving a calculation and being left to interpret it yourself.

Not sure whether you need to complete a tax return?

You do not need to work that out before speaking to us.

Tell us what has changed during the year and we can help you understand whether a return is needed and what information you may need to provide.

This can be particularly useful if you have started earning money in a new way, taken on some freelance work, bought a rental property or your personal circumstances have changed.

Getting the information to us earlier gives us more time to help

We know tax returns are easy to put off, especially when the deadline still feels a long way away.

Sending the information earlier gives us more time to prepare the return carefully, ask any questions that come up and talk to you about anything we think deserves a closer look.

It also gives you more time to prepare for the tax payment itself. There is simply more room to be useful when everything is not being done at the last minute.

A simple habit that makes tax much less stressful

Consider putting around 20% of your income into a separate savings account as you go.

That way, when your tax bill arrives, the money has already been set aside rather than having to come out of your everyday finances.

If the account pays interest, your money can also be working for you while you wait.

The exact amount you should put aside will depend on your individual circumstances, so we can help you work out a figure that makes sense for you.
